Biography
|
Nicky Mehta is that singular artist who combines poignant, thoughtful lyrics,
soaring melodies, and inventive guitar-work with an equally moving, confident performance.
"With a pure, effortless alto voice and a poetry rare among her peers" she can
"lead us into some deep waters without making us feel that we are about to drown."
As a songwriter, she is a consummate artist who finds joy and hope in the most unexpected places,
and as a performer, she gives herself over completely to her audience with intensity, passion, and wit.
 |
A seasoned musician, there can be no question that Mehta has paid her dues.
In addition to her own solo work, she is one of the most sought-after back-up vocalists
on the Winnipeg acoustic music scene,
and has recorded, performed and toured internationally
as a back-up singer with such notable artists as Sam Baardman,
Mark Reeves and Rick Unruh. A sideline R & B/funk ensemble called Electric Lunchbox
rounds out her performing schedule.
|
Since 1995, she has been fronting projects that have gained widespread attention.
Her five-piece folk-rock band, Good Blind Soul, and a folk duo called Wellspring
placed Mehta on all of Winnipeg’s premiere indoor and outdoor stages, playing
coffeehouses to festivals. With these groups she released a four-song demo
as well as a full-length recording of her original material, which received airplay on both the CBC and commercial radio. The last year and a half has seen her quietly building up her
cache of songs, playing consistently and participating in showcases
at the North American Folk Alliance, the National Campus Radio Conference,
and at Manitoba’s Contact 2000. She has built an audience of loyal fans
over the years and with the release of her new full-length solo CD Weather
Vane, she is sure to win the allegiance of many, many more.
